WHAT THE HECK IS MULETOWN?
After all these years, the question is asked daily. Sometimes it's meant in the historical sense and we can tell them about the heritage of Columbia, Tennessee. We can point to pictures on the wall of Muleday Parades or the Mule Auction on the courthouse steps.
Often, however, that's not what is being asked. It's more like, "what makes Muletown, Muletown?". They sense something about this place that is unique. What is that thing? It's hard to put your finger on, but you can feel it. So, why MULE-TOWN? Here's our answer. When you think of a mule, most people think of a hard working animal. An animal that can literally pull its weight (and quite a bit more). They are stubborn creatures, and that brings to mind determination, tenacity. Grit. It's the quality of not giving up easily. That's every small business that survives the early years. It's showing up every day and doing what you said you'd do. For your people, for your town.
Because we're owning that word, too- "Town". We don't think a town as a small version of a city. It's about a feeling. A town moves at a slower pace. Not because it's incapable of speed or fearful of change, but because it's anchored in tradition. It has roots. It has a legacy. It's not trying to be on the cutting edge of every trend in a constant struggle to reinvent itself. It's simply trying to be the best version of itself. People tend to know each other a little more deeply. It has a poise, a dignity, a quiet confidence that isn't disturbed by what's going on up the road.
So, "What the heck is Muletown"? Maybe click here if you want to catch some of that feeling I keep talking about. I can't speak for everyone, but if I had to sum it up in one word I'd say it's "home". It's the place I want to come back to over and over even after a grand adventure. It's the hearth I want to warm by. It's the porch I want to watch the sun rise and set from. You may not be from our Muletown, but I bet you have your own.
